Rev. Beth Hector found her way to Butte in 2005 as the very part time pastor of United Congregational Church. Beth came originally from Colorado and got to Montana by way of North Dakota and Maryland, with detours in New Mexico and Arkansas. She has her Master of Divinity out of Pacific School of Religion, Berkeley, California (1992) and her Master of Social Work out of the University of Montana, Missoula (2007). She was carpooling with another member of this church’s pastoral team, and received an invitation, and has been here ever since, and loves it here!
She lives here in Butte with her husband, two dogs and grandcat, and sometimes her younger adult child, works full time in Helena in mental health, and bikes and hikes and camps and paints in her (plentiful) spare time.
Having grown up United Church of Christ, and uncomfortable with traditional Christian dogma but identifying as Christian, Unity is a good place for me. I can be reverent for reverence here. No matter who you are where you are on life’s journey, or whatever the path you are taking to find your way to God, the Divine, the Source of All Being (however you term your Higher Power), it will be honored and revered here. This is the first place I have been at home in my faith in a very long time.
Elizabeth Wing Spooner has been an active member of Butte Unity for the past 25 years. “Wing,” as she prefers to be called, has been officiating services at the Center for the past two years, and has been a guest speaker for many years previously. She and her husband, John Meeks, have also officiated several weddings and memorial services. She will soon be embarking on a ministerial degree from the Emerson Theological Institute. Wing currently serves as President of the Board of Directors, and has held other board positions over the years, such as Treasurer and Secretary. Wing has lived in Montana most of her life and makes her home in Rocker with her husband, two Great Danes and a cat. She also has two grown children who live in Lolo, MT and St. Paul, MN. Wing would like the Butte community to know that no matter who you are or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome at the Butte Unity Spiritual Center.
